GENERAL SUMMARY
Supervise two-person crew responsible for conducting routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment. Crew also performs preventive maintenance tasks to forestall outages and maintain system integrity.
Opportunity Summary
The High Voltage Substation/Transmission Technician Lead is responsible for conducting routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment to identify signs of wear, damage, or corrosion, followed by performing preventative maintenance tasks to forestall outages and maintain system integrity. In emergency situations, prompt coordination with NYPA and external contractors ensures the safe repair or replacement of damaged components, while collaboration with technicians and field crews aids in restoration efforts. Additionally, supervision of testing and troubleshooting involves overseeing the use of specialized equipment.
Primary Duties
Line Inspection and Maintenance
� Conduct routine inspections of high-voltage transmission lines, towers, and associated equipment.
� Identify signs of wear, damage, or corrosion.
� Perform preventative maintenance tasks to forestall outages and maintain system integrity.
Emergency Repair Coordination
� Promptly coordinate with NYPA and external contractors in response to emergency situations, such as storm damage or equipment failure.
� Manage the repair or replacement of damaged components, including conductors, insulators, and hardware during emergencies.
� Collaborate with technicians and field crews during restoration efforts.
Testing and Troubleshooting Supervision
� Oversee the use of specialized testing equipment to assess transmission line performance.
� Supervise the diagnosis of faults, short circuits, and insulation issues.
� Ensure calibration of protective relays and other control devices.
Vegetation Management Oversight
� Coordinate with vegetation management teams and external contractors to clear vegetation around transmission lines, preventing interference.
� Ensure maintenance of right-of-way (ROW) clearance.
� Supervise inspection and management of tree growth near transmission corridors.
Documentation and Reporting Management
� Oversee the maintenance of accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
� Supervise the reporting of findings to supervisors and updating of asset management systems.
� Document and report safety incidents and near misses.
Safety Compliance Oversight
� Ensure adherence to safety guidelines, including lockout/tagout procedures.
� Oversee the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during fieldwork.
� Supervise participation in safety training and awareness programs.
Administrative
� Oversee CMMS Maximo system implementation, utilization, and auditing for tracking maintenance activities related to high voltage transmission equipment, ensuring accurate data entry, compliance, and optimized performance.
� Collaborate with maintenance teams and stakeholders to develop and optimize maintenance task schedules, minimizing downtime, maximizing equipment availability, and adjusting schedules for efficiency.
� Review, prioritize, assign tasks to technicians, monitor progress, ensure timely completion and accurate documentation, and analyze work order date for trends and process improvement.
Budgeting
� Monitor maintenance expenditures, ensure budget adherence for high voltage substation operations, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimize resource utilization while maintaining operation effectiveness.
� Collaborate with finance and management to provide insights into budget development, especially for high voltage substation maintenance, and assist in creating annual maintenance budgets by providing data on costs, equipment needs, and potential upgrades.
Job Qualifications
� Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate degree in a technical field desirable.
� Demonstrated proficiency in high-voltage transmission line maintenance procedures, including inspection, repair, and preventative maintenance tasks.
� Preferably 5 to 6 years of experience in high-voltage transmission line maintenance. Knowledge of transmission infrastructure and equipment is essential.
� Ability to effectively coordinate and oversee repairs with NYPA and external contractors, ensuring timely response to emergency situations and efficient execution of maintenance activities.
� Strong commitment to safety protocols and regulations, with experience in enforcing safety measures during fieldwork.
� Proven capability to diagnose faults, troubleshoot issues, and implement effective solutions to maintain transmission line integrity and minimize downtime.
� Understanding of electrical systems, grounding principles, and protective relays is essential for identifying and addressing potential issues with transmission infrastructure.
� Experience maintaining accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities. Familiarity with asset management systems and the ability to generate comprehensive reports for supervisors and stakeholders.
