Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Communication Technician/Engineer opportunity in Carlsbad, NM to support the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).
Work Location: On-Site at WIPP
Per diem is available for those who qualify.
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the nation’s only permanent nuclear waste repository for defense-generated transuranic (TRU) waste generated from Department of Energy (DOE) sites across the country. Waste is permanently isolated over 2,000 feet underground in deep salt beds.
Duties:
The Communication Technician/Engineer will be responsible for the design, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of critical communication systems used across the plant and mine. This role ensures that all communication systems operate efficiently, and reliably, and meet the organization’s operational and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Maintenance:
Plan, design, and implement communication solutions to meet operational needs.
Oversee the installation, configuration, and maintenance of mine phone systems to ensure reliable connectivity across the mine site.
Develop and maintain Motorola radio systems, including programming, troubleshooting, and repairing hardware and software components.
Manage and enhance the IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless tracking system, ensuring accurate tracking of personnel and assets.
Design and maintain the public address (PA) system to provide clear and effective communication throughout the plant and mine areas.
Oversee the maintenance and expansion of the business fiber network infrastructure to support high-speed data and voice communication needs.
Troubleshooting and Optimization:
Respond promptly to system issues and conduct in-depth troubleshooting of communication systems to minimize downtime.
Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to resolve technical issues, identify root causes, and implement permanent solutions.
Perform regular system tests and preventative maintenance to detect potential failures and ensure optimal system performance.
Conduct periodic audits and assessments of communication systems to recommend upgrades, improvements, or replacements to ensure cutting-edge reliability and performance.
Documentation and Compliance:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of all communication system configurations, changes, and maintenance activities.
Ensure all communication systems comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and organizational policies.
Provide training and support to staff on the proper use and maintenance of communication systems.
Collaboration and Support:
Work closely with engineering, operations, and safety teams to align communication solutions with operational needs and safety requirements.
Support project teams with communication infrastructure planning, providing technical expertise as needed.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or related field preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in communication system design, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Technical Skills:
Strong proficiency with mine phone systems, Motorola radio technology, IWT wireless tracking systems, PA systems, and fiber network infrastructure.
Proven expertise in troubleshooting communication hardware and software issues.
Familiarity with communication network protocols, fiber optics, and RF technology.
Hands-on experience with cabling, splicing, and testing fiber networks is desirable.
Soft Skills:
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and under minimal supervision.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and operational excellence.
