JOB SUMMARY
Support the SRNS Nuclear & Criticality Safety Engineering organization in the development, review, and implementation of nuclear safety documentation for various facilities at the Savannah River Site.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Provide technical assistance in developing and reviewing nuclear safety documents and analyses, technical safety requirements, and related technical support documentation. Ensure that the developed nuclear safety documentation complies with requirements and as necessary, applicable controls are implemented in field procedures.
Conduct Nuclear Safety Program assessments, facility Readiness Assessments (RAs), and Implementation Verification Reviews (IVRs).
Services shall be provided using SRNS processes and procedures. Programmatic guidance will be provided by SRNS.
Apply technical experience in field of specialization or broad-based experience in multiple technical f ields, and use other technical resources within the company, to resolve complex problems.
Incorporate advanced technical practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning.
Provide leadership in determining solutions to complex problems and be recognized as having expertise in a functional area(s) of technical expertise.
Develop solutions to complex technical problems in fields of expertise.
Keep informed on technical needs within the company and technical trends in area of expertise in the external world.
Be aware of capabilities of the work group and needs of its customers.
Identify technical programs which can be carried out with little guidance and take the initiative to accomplish them.
Lead task teams for developing solutions to more complex problems.
Prepare plans including schedules, budgets and personnel requirements for solving major technical tasks identified by management.
Develop schedules, monitor progress, monitor expenditures of budget and review quality of work performed.
Include research, development, testing, quality assurance requirements.
Communicate the results and objectives verbally and in manuscript form to customers, colleagues, managers and oversight groups.
Prepare reports for external publication.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
An advanced degree and experience, a Ph.D. degree and about 10 years' experience. OR A MS degree and 12 years' experience. OR A BS degree and approximately 15 years' experience.
Experience/Skills:
Considered an internal expert in area of expertise. Contributes to advancing knowledge in field of expertise through various avenues such as internal and external publications and professional society presentations. Can solve complex problems in field.
Skills: Demonstrate a minimum of 15 years of recent experience in the nuclear safety industry through support of the Department of Energy (DOE) or the commercial nuclear industry.
Alternate combination of education and experience will be considered where candidate has an advanced degree.
Familiar with Nuclear Safety Programs and considered a Nuclear Safety Subject Matter Expert.
Previous experience in performing and/or evaluating nuclear operations.
Proficient in performing Nuclear Safety Program assessments, facility RAs, and IVRs.
Proven ability to solve complex problems in the field.
Previous experience with the use and implementation of 10 CFR 830, DOE O 425.1, DOE O 420.1, DOE-Std-3009, Technical Safety Requirements and related directives, standards and guides is required.
Must demonstrate personal accountability for facility/project schedules, deadlines, budgets, and the safe performance of work.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates who have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years are preferred.
Previous experience in developing, reviewing, and maintaining SRS safety basis documents is preferred.
OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Area Security Access: Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties. After award, the selected candidate will be notified when to apply for a clearance based on specific work assignments.
Work Hours:
Up to a 40-hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules including
5/8s (8 hour/day; five days per week), 4/10’s (10 hours/day; four days per week), and 9/80’s (9 hours/day, five days on week AA and four days on week BB. Work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each workday has 30-minute lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager.
