Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Mechanical Design Engineer opportunity in Oak Ridge, TN for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Position Title: Mechanical Design Engineer
As a Mechanical Design Engineer on the Second Target Station (STS) project, you will play a crucial role in the objective to build the world-leading high brightness Neutron Science Facility. You will have the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals and contribute to groundbreaking research in a variety of fields, including energy production and storage, medical advancements, and environmental studies.
Job Description:
The Mechanical Design Engineer participates in and contributes to the design and integration of the Target Systems scope, and will be responsible for providing detail drawings, design specifications, procurement support, installation support, and testing support for the assigned portion of Target Systems scope under the direction of a senior or lead engineer. This role reports to the STS Target Systems Interface Systems Group Leader and interfaces with engineers, scientists and designers across and outside the project.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Support engineers to prepare clear, complete and accurate drawings, analyses and other design-related deliverables from models, layouts, rough or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions.
Communicate and collaborate with engineers, designers, scientists and vendors throughout the design process, and assists senior or lead engineers with team coordination and management of deliverable timelines.
Participate in R&D and prototyping of proposed equipment and systems, including assembly and validation testing of mechanical systems as well as preparation of technical reports, documentation, and presentations for design reviews and management.
Produce or contribute to various engineering deliverables, including but not limited to:
3-D CAD models and hardware drawings using PTC Creo
Design and Analysis Calculations
Requirements documents
Interface documents between Target Systems and other project technical scope
Technical Specifications
Statements of Work
Installation & Test Plans
Basic Qualifications (we strongly encourage candidates to apply if they meet these qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree in a mechanical engineering or similar discipline.
2+ years of professional experience in design, assembly, analysis or testing of complex mechanical systems.
Proficiency in 3-D CAD design of complex parts and large assemblies.
Ability to communicate engineering problems and design concepts through presentation to engineers, designers, scientists and other project partners.
Familiarity with the application of engineering principles, including a sound understanding of mechanics, fluids, heat transfer, etc.
Preferred Qualifications (relevant but not required for consideration; interested candidates should apply even if they do not meet these qualifications):
Advanced degree in a related engineering discipline.
Familiarity with PTC Creo for CAD design and Windchill or other PDM or PLM software.
Familiarity with analytical tools such as ANSYS Mechanical and Fluent CFD.
Experience designing systems for operation in an accelerator or nuclear environment.
Experience with drawings, schematics and P&IDs, including codes and standards such as Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
Professional experience in design, analysis, assembly and/or testing of complex mechanical systems.
Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems, and to both work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams.
Proven success with fundamental machine design. Comfort and familiarity with commercially-available components, such as optical measurement equip, kinematic mounts, bearings, sensors/switches.
Measures of Effectiveness:
Consistently delivers high quality engineering designs, drawing packages, and other engineering documentation.
Successfully performs mathematical calculation and analysis under the supervision of an experienced engineer.
Interacts productively with designers and engineers to develop ideas into workable engineering solutions.
