Outage Mechanic – Diablo Canyon Power Plant, Avila Beach, CA


This is an outage temporary additional position supporting our upcoming refueling outage and is an IBEW represented classification currently subject to collective bargaining and union dues.

This position is contingent on ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access at a commercial nuclear power plant including background investigation, initial and random drug screen, psychological screen, and passing grade on written tests.

Department Overview

Diablo Canyon Power Plant's (DCPP) Mechanical Maintenance Department is responsible for performing maintenance and modification to plant systems, structures, and components during Refueling Outage periods.

Position Summary

This position's principal duties consist of performing mechanical maintenance and modifications activities including work in radiological controlled areas during Refueling Outages at a commercial nuclear power plant.

• Must possess a strong mechanical related equipment background.

• Must be able to wear company provided PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) including but not limited to:

hard hat: safety glasses; safety goggles; gloves; full body fall protection harnesses; ear plugs and/or muffs; safety vests; raingear; fire resistant clothing consisting of long sleeve shirts and pants.

• The normal work schedule is a 4 day, 10 hour shift – Monday-Thursday 0630-1700 hours. May be required to work weekends, night shifts, extended hours, holidays, with rotating days off.

Responsibilities


• Perform journey level Mechanic duties engaged in repairing, installing and maintaining all types of mechanical equipment in a commercial nuclear power plant and related facilities not requiring the use of machine tools. Such work will include but is not necessarily limited to bearings, piping, process tubing, valves, pipe hangers, pumps, fans, couplings, mechanical seals, scaffolding, and machinery alignment.

• Duties may include heat exchanger and pressure vessel repair work, carpentry work, painting, application of special coatings, repairs to building, installation and removal of thermal insulation and refractory materials, installation and repairs to plumbing systems, and repair, layout, bending installation of power plant piping including process tubing, and service all types of fire extinguisher. May be required to do related welding, cutting, and burning of non-code and/or non-structural nature.

• If qualified by PG&E; engage in performing all classes of power plant rigging, including that necessary for safe handling of heavy machinery. Also required to make up slings and keep all rigging equipment in proper repair.


Qualifications


• 3 years demonstrated experience performing mechanical maintenance activities.

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience

• Valid Driver's License

• Proficient in the use of hand, portable power and free standing tools such as bench grinders and drill presses.

• Ability to read and understand drawings including piping and instrument diagrams, piping isometrics, original equipment manufacturers' maintenance manuals.

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

• Ability to transport material up to 500 pounds in carts; work in confined spaces; access equipment through an 18 inch diameter manhole; and work in up to 120 degree Fahrenheit environment

• Ability to bend, stoop, and twist; climb including ladders and stairs; walk up to five miles daily; and stand or sit for long periods of time

• Ability to work at heights on stationary scaffolds

• Ability to successfully complete radiation worker and department specific training

• Ability to pass respirator qualification, which entails passing a medical examination, respirator training, and fit testing requirements

• Ability to wear and work in a respirator in radioactivity contaminated and/or environmentally hazardous areas of the plant

• Ability to work in and around radiation/contamination fields and environmental hazard areas
