[Nuclear Engineer] General Engineer/Physical Scientist

Background

Duties:

This is a General Engineer/Physical Scientist entry-level career opportunity located in a regional office setting Region III Naperville, IL.

Applications are being accepted from entry-level engineers and scientists who have recently graduated and have less than one (1) year of professional engineering or physical science work experience OR will be graduating between December 2024 and June 2025 to fill future vacancies. Applications will be reviewed at the end of the open period and for up to 90 days after the vacancy closing date.

Responsibilities include:

protecting public health and safety;
protecting the environment;
protecting and safeguarding nuclear materials and the safe operation of nuclear power plants in the interest of national security;
and assuring conformity with antitrust laws.

NRC Regional Office employees perform these functions through: engineering and nuclear materials technical reviews; materials licensing reviews; reactor and nuclear materials inspection, investigation, and enforcement; and evaluation of the safe operation of nuclear power reactors.

Duties and responsibilities vary and may increase according to the grade level and series of the position.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirements (see below) for either the GG-801 (engineering) or GG-1301 (physical science) occupational series, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

Minimum Qualifications:

GG-07 - In order to qualify at the GG-07 level, applicants must have one of the following:
Completed 1 full year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GG-05 grade level which is defined as experience that demonstrates a basic knowledge in the field of engineering discipline OR
Completed 1 full year of graduate-level education (18 semester hours) related to an Engineering or Physical Science discipline OR
Meet the definition of Superior Academic Achievement. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

GG-09 - In order to qualify at the GG-09 level, applicants must have one of the following:

Completed 1 full year of specialized experience that is equivalent to the GG-07 grade level which is defined as experience that demonstrates knowledge in the field of engineering including nuclear plants OR experience with research and development programs in the field of nuclear engineering. OR
Completed 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours) leading to a Master's degree or completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree that is related to an Engineering or Physical Science discipline.

Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable.
