You will be doing a 5F test before going on to the 6G. It’s fillet welds that they will have to demonstrate they can stack welds properly and to the correct requirements.
It’s a super coupon test, which means both processes are required. They do a TIG root pass ¼” then follow with Flux cap ¼”.” 6G pipe test
Weld test for TEI consist of 2 heavy wall or super coupons, 2 inch. It is a two weld process, tig and flux core using .045 wire for fcaw. Both test will be in the 6g position and welded at the same time. You will need to tig the root and then 50% of the coupons using tig. Once that is accomplished you will then switch over to fcaw and do the remainder of the coupon plus the cap. NO weaving. Only stringers including the cap. Make sure you give the coupons time to cool between passes which is why you’re doing both at the same time. You can also feather your starts and stops within the passes and on your cap. He will give you a scrap piece of pate in the beginning to set the machine for fcaw. While you are doing so he will ask you to run vertical passes with the fcaw to see if you can weld.
Below are the new testing details.
1. 5F- This will be a 3/8" multi pass filler weld. If they can't pass this visual test all testing is done and the welder will be dismissed. If the applicant passes the 5F, we move to FC plate test.
2. GTAW/FCAW: 6G XXS 2.5in pipe. The root pass is visually inspected before the welder can continue. If the root pass is rejected by visual inspection (VI) all testing is done and the applicant is dismissed. If the VI is acceptable, the welder continues.
3. FCAW: 2G, 3G and 4G on 1/2in plate with a 60deg included bevel and still backing. The root pass is visually inspected before the welder can continue. If the root pass is rejected by visual inspection (VI) all testing is done and the applicant is dismissed.
4. GMAW: 2G & 3G on 1/2" plate with an open root. The 3G test will have the root pass done vertical down and hot pass, fill and cap vertical up. Same inspection criteria as FC will be followed.
5. GTAW: 2G & 3G on 1/2" test plates with an open root with 60 degrees included bevel. Same inspection criteria as GMAW test plates.
At this point, all testing is done. Plates and pipe will be cut and bent for final inspection.
Weld Test Details: It will take anywhere between 2.5 – 4.5 hours depending on the person. Small diameter 6G 1-1-GTA, 1-1-FCAW – 2, 3, 4G (or 6G), & 1-1 GMA would be a plus but not required. If you do the 6G pipe, it’s Flux and TIG. IF they don’t have pipe then it’ll be 2/3G on plate for TIG.
